"It should hardly surprise us that individuals who focus on money, image and achieving popularity report more depression, poorer mental health and less vitality than those less materialistic. Materialists also report more physical symptoms — headaches, backaches, sore muscles and sore throats — meaning that in both their mental and physical lives, poor health and materialistic values go together. Other related studies showed that people with materialistic goals report fewer positive emotions and lower levels of life satisfaction compared with people who are less concerned with materialistic aims. Similar results are even found when you trace people over a period of time, noting what happens as they become more materialistic. Whether you are assessing Canadian students, US college graduates, Icelandic or Norwegian adults or Chinese business students, levels of overall wellbeing consistently decline as levels of materialism go up"
