You may have noticed a lot of big businesses recently drawing our attention to a subject they would previously have rather you ignored: waste plastic. It would be nice to think that this was all due to some kind of collective environmental awakening happening at a level at which it could actually make some tangible difference (namely, at the point of production) though realistically, it probably has more to do with China's recent refusal to import any more of our rubbish. Can't put it out of sight not more, so out of mind neither.
Not that the motivation matters to much if the result is the same: a reduction in plastic pollution. This may not be so, however - instead of reducing what we produce, when we're done with it, we could just burn it, which is of course insane; but that, generally speaking, is what the human race is.
Anyway, if you're a Co-op member and have any interest in this sort of thing, now's a good time to get your foot up their arse. They have an online survey running until 3rd April asking their customers' opinions on plastic and waste. I shop at the Co-op sometimes because of all the supermarkets I know, it seems to be the least evil. Also because there's one just across the road. So I thought it'd be worth telling them it great it would be if a large supermarket took the zero waste plunge, or at least, stopped wrapping their broccoli in a pointless layer of plastic. Maybe you could give that a go, too. Took me five minutes. Cheers.
