I don't know why free jazz isn't a more popular genre of music. To me it represents pure, exuberant fizzy joy, a frothing over of life into life, explosive flowering, happiness. Do some people have no joy in their hearts at all?
This week I have been enjoying the work of Ivo Perelman, through his numerous collaborations with other free jazz musicians like Matthew Shipp, Joe Morris, Gerald Cleaver and other people you've never heard of. I'd never heard of Ivo before last week either, but the YouTube algorithm is a gracious god. Obviously Ivo has a lot of friends - take a look at his discography. I feel like free jazz musicians generally will have a lot of friends.
Be happy, be free, be jazz.
