I didn't really expect the devil's ivy shoot I rooted into one of my bottle planters when I was running low on pots to do this well. It's gone from this, last June:
to this, today:
Quite impressive. I wondered if I might be able to tease it out of the hole in the bottle, without disturbing whatever root structure it had managed to established, but it wasn't to be. Look at the roots it has grown. Just look at them:
Magnificent. I love roots. The things they get up to, beneath the ground and human comprehension.
Truly, the devil's ivy is an unkillablle plant. I repotted it to celebrate that fact. Now I'm thinking about further propagation. Thing is, like porthos vines, they tend to grow only one long vine, rarely branching out or sending off shoots I might be able to turn into new and independent plants. Never mind. As is always the case with plants, patience is essential.

You can absolutely propagate your devil's ivy, I take cuttings from mine all the time. Check behind where leaf meets stem and you should see a little bump - I think I can see one in your photo. That bump is the beginning of an aerial root. Cut a centimetres above that root and pop it into a glass of water until it develops white rootlets (a couple of weeks) then plant it out. Happy many baby devil's ivy plants:)
ReplyDeleteWhen I say cut a centimetre above the root, I mean above in the sense of back toward the base of the plant. Because devil's ivy droops downwards, when you make the cutting you will turn it upright to sit it in the glass of water. Then the cut will be a centimetre below the root, because of course you need the root, that's where the little rootlets grow from. Have I confused you completely? There's probably a youtube video somewhere..
ReplyDeleteNo, that makes sense, thank you! I wonder though if they ever "branch out" or do they always just grow as one long vine?
DeleteMine was grown from a cutting and has just grown one long vine - even when you prune the tips for propagation it just continues growing in a long vine, but now, after two years, it has just produced an extra leaf at its base which I think may grow into a new vine.. I don't know if it naturally does this or if the pruning for cuttings has stimulated extra growth at the base?? If you want multiple vines you could plant several cuttings in one pot, and maybe the competition would also stimulate new growth at the base?? Just guessing here..
